MineralTrail: A Guided Sustainability Due Diligence Tool

DiliCHANCE MineralTrail Tool: A simple way to strengthen sustainability due diligence

For companies navigating sustainability due diligence, understanding their current practices can be complicated, and identifying what to strengthen next can be harder still. The MineralTrail Tool is designed to make that process simpler. Rather than only showing companies where they stand, it points them to specific areas for improvement and gives them a clear next step.

What MineralTrail helps companies do

The tool guides users through the key elements of the OECD six-step framework: governance, risk identification, prevention and mitigation, monitoring, communication, and remediation. In doing so, it helps companies reflect on how their current due diligence practices align with internationally recognised expectations for Responsible Business Conduct.

Completing the tool takes approximately 2-20 minutes, depending on how many modules are selected. No company name or supporting evidence is required.

By answering a short set of questions, enterprises can:

  • understand their current approach
  • identify opportunities for improvement
  • receive practical recommendations based on their responses
  • support internal dialogue and decision-making

From assessment to action

The tool goes beyond a self-assessment. For each area where practices can be strengthened, MineralTrail links to relevant explanations, resources and tools, so that companies can put the recommendations into practice. Because the modules can be completed separately, users can start with the areas most relevant to their business and return to others later.

Who can use it

MineralTrail is primarily designed for enterprises operating in mineral value chains. It can also support enterprises in other sectors that want to strengthen their responsible sourcing and due diligence practices. The tool is free to use, and companies are not required to share their name or upload supporting evidence.

MineralTrail was developed within DiliCHANCE under the leadership of EIT RawMaterials, in collaboration with project partners WWF, the World Resources Forum Association, Levin Sources and WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business). DiliCHANCE brings together expertise from business, science and civil society to make mineral supply chain due diligence more practical and accessible. The project’s other outputs, including a study on what companies need to implement due diligence, are available on the DiliCHANCE website.
