Design and Implementation IoT Based Affordable Smart Home System

In recent years, extensive technological advancement has brought substantial changes to the lifestyle of people where smart devices (like smartphones) play an integral part. The household appliances exhibit intelligence when controlled through smartphones, tablets or any other voice-activated devices. This paper aims to design and implement a framework to establish an interconnection between electrical appliances, sensors and actuators to control the built environment intelligently and efficiently, in both a retrofit home and a newly built smart home. Today’s IoT (Internet of Things) enabled smart home is more energy efficient, secure, and can manage other resources (like lighting, heating and air-conditioning) more efficiently when compared to existing residential units. A framework was designed using TRIZ methodology in which interconnections between the devices were established by developing a centralized smart control system which has a network of wireless sensors and actuators. It is cost-effective and compatible with majority of the existing household appliances. The system is connected through a wireless local network and can be controlled using customized Android based application or voice activated controls. Moreover, this system can also be retrofitted to an existing house with minimal architectural alterations. This IoT based smart home system includes smart energy monitoring, and centralized control system which is robust and scalable. Further, the collected time-series energy consumption data from individual appliances can be utilized to improve the system efficacy and to increase the energy efficiency. In conclusion, such IoT enabled smart home systems can transform the lives of the occupants, and improve the usability, security and sustainability of their homes.
