Sustainable Recycling Industries Program Launched in India

Daniel Ziegerer at SRI India LaunchMumbai, 16 december 2014 The Sustainable Recycling Industries programme (SRI) was launched in India at the Waste Management Summit in Mumbai on 16 December 2014. The SRI program is a 4-year global programme which will be active in India, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, South Africa, Egypt and Ghana. In India, the main focus of the programme is on plastic recycling, particularly on recycling of hazardous waste materials, and the development of local life cycle inventories.

In his address at the inaugural session Daniel Ziegerer, Director of Cooperation, Embassy of Switzerland, recalled that “Switzerland was one of the first countries to introduce an effective e-waste management system. This was possible through a stakeholder process involving industry, recyclers, public authorities and the scientific community”. He also said “the SRI programme builds upon previous cooperation activities between India and Switzerland on cleaner production and e-waste”.

This programme is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and implemented by the Swiss Institute for Materials Science & Technology (Empa) together with the World Resources Forum Association (WRFA) and ecoinvent. The Confederation of Indian Industries Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (CII-GBC) will coordinate the activities of the SRI programme in India.
