Cleantech Innovations – UNIDO pathway for achieving SDGs
Reshmi Vasudevan, Sandeep Tandon
UNIDO’s objectives and interventions are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, especially with goal 9: to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. UNIDO’s activities also find close relation to other SDGs that include SDG 5 (gender equality), SDG 7 (energy for all), SDG 11 (sustainable cities) and SDG 13 (climate change). The paper will look at the role of cleantech innovations, as a critical, but common thread that runs through all the measures in achieving the above mentioned SDGS. To understand the role of innovations in achieving these SDGs, the paper will explore UNIDO’s Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that leverages the power of entrepreneurship to address the energy, environmental and economic problems. The GCIP programme is now being run in 9 economies in transition. This paper will use GCIP India experiences to explore how cleantech innovations, primarily in SMEs, are playing important role in meeting SDG 9, and catalysing other SDGs indicated above.
