Zurich, 15 October 2013 Switzerland’s current network of railway and motorways is more than 30 year old. It is time to develop new intelligent solutions to address new demands and trends in society. Swiss Federal Councillor of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication, Mrs. Doris Leuthard, said this at a panel discussion on Swiss concepts towards sustainable mobility.
Possible solutions could be a more sufficient choice of mobility inter alia the choice of the carrier, or an intelligent peak shift to avoid mobility bottlenecks. Mrs. Leuthard spoke at the 12th edition of the Lifefair Forum Swiss. She warned that demographic trends and commuting patterns pose serious challenges for the development of a sustainable Swiss mobility network.
In the panel discussion actors from stakeholder groups such as Kathrin Amacker (SBB, Swiss national railway company), Hans-Jörg Bertschi (CEO of Bertschi), Swiss parliamentarian Bastien Girod, and Ulrich Walt (Holcim), discussed how such a sustainable Swiss mobility network could look like. Most attention was given to strategies to promote car or train transportation systems.
The next Lifefair Forum will be on energy efficiency, held in Zurich, January 15, 2014.
